This is the original soundtrack & unreleased tunes for The Hermit of Treig, a BAFTA winning documentary.

For a year Cameron McLellan and Mischa Stevens (us the music makers) lived with Lizzie Mackenzie (the director) in a house in Carlops, the Scottish Borders. This was just as Lizzie was starting to record footage of Ken (the hermit). As her footage started to become a film, she asked us to create a soundtrack for it, and we agreed.

A year later in 2021, as covid still held its reign over the world, and the winter was melting into spring, we created a DIY studio in our tiny garden shed. Here we wrote and recorded the first demos for an early version of the film. This version had a more sprightly, upbeat tone, so we spent our days writing gospel and country songs. We wanted to create music that could have been made in a cabin in the woods, or around a campfire, or by lost boys marching through the forest with whistles and sticks.

Later that year, as the last of the summer was turning into autumn, we regrouped to create the final score. We created another DIY studio, in a farm shed in Aberfoyle, surrounded by trees and hills. By then, the film had changed a lot, becoming a darker, deeper film. So we recreated the soundtrack, bringing feelings of melancholy, nostalgia and fear whilst keeping some of the sprightful vibes we'd made in spring.

This soundtrack album includes several pieces from the film which we have extended to become fuller songs. It also includes unreleased tunes from our first months in spring. We hope you dig it!
